Machine is defined as "any mechanical or electrical device that transmits or modifies energy to perform or assist in the performance of human tasks". Wind energy industry hasn't been totally mechanized yet in terms of installation of WTGs. So, machines or equipments only assist humans in the performance of their tasks.
All organizations are established to achieve certain goals which can vary during the lifetime of organization. To be able to achieve these goals, activities or results that are important to successfully achieving your organization's goals have to be measured. An old management adage explains the other reason to measure activities or results: "You can not manage what you can not measure".
Performance measurement is defined as "the process of developing measurable indicators that can be systematically tracked to assess progress made in achieving predetermined goals and using such indicators to assess progress in achieving these goals" by The U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO). As it is stated in this definition, we have to designate measurable indicators to evaluate performance of a wind turbine installation team.
In very recent wind turbine erection project that I attended, I focused on designating these performance indicators and came up with these ones:

In very recent wind turbine erection project that I attended, I focused on designating these performance indicators and came up with these ones:
Main Installation
- Foundation Installation
- Pre-Assembled Power Module Installation (if avaliable)
- Tower Base Section Installation
- Temporary Wiring for Lighting
- Mid-Tower Section(s) Installation
- Top Tower Section Installation
- Nacelle Installation
- Rotor Installation on Ground / Hub Installation
- Lifting Rotor / Single Blade Installation
- Safety Labelling
Cable Installation
- Pre-Assembled ower Module Cable Installation
- Tower Base Section Cable Installation
- Mid-Tower Section(s) Cable Installation
- Top Tower Section Cable Installation
- Top Deck/Yaw Deck Cable Installation
- Nacelle Cable Installation
- Hub Cable Installation
Tests
- Measurement of Lightning Arrester Resistance
- Insulation Test
- Voltage Test
Alignment
- Gearbox Alignment
- Generator Alignment
Commissioning
- Downtower Commissioning
- Uptower Commissioning
These indicators may not be valid for all WTG types, but it encloses installation of many of them. By the help of these indicators, you can directly measure performance of your installation team.
As Sydney Smith indicated, “the thing about performance, even if it's only an illusion, is that it is a celebration of the fact that we do contain within ourselves infinite possibilities”.
