As I indicated in my previous blog entry, there are some mechanical, electrical or hydraulic devices that modifies energy to assist in the performance of WTG installation team tasks.
In this entry, I will try to give you information about must have WTG installation tools:
- Foundation Bolt Tensioners: These tools are hydraulic tools used for tensioning wind turbine tower base bolts.
- Hydraulic Torque Wrenches: These tools are used for tensioning bolts between wind turbine towers. There is very important point that it is better not to excess %70 of capacity of these torque wrenches while they are continuously, heavily used such as in installation operations to prevent any breakdown. You can push limits of these tools in maintenance operations.
- Electrical Torque Wrenches: These tools are also used for tensioning works in wind turbines. The difference between hydraulic and electrical torque wrenches is that by the help of electrical torque wrenches, you can work faster and the results can not be as accurate as hydraulic torque wrenches. They can also be used to lock rotor in wind turbines such as GE 2.5xL. Capacity rule which I indicated above is also valid for these wrenches.
- Manuel Torque Wrenches: These tools are used for tensioning small bolts in wind turbines.
- Impact Wrenches: These wrenches are used for pre-tensioning works in wind turbines. Distinctive feature of these wrenches is that you can pre-tension bolts very quickly by the help of them.
There are several brands that stand out with their quality in bolting solutions such as Hydratight, Hytorc, Plarad and Titan.
The other required tools are:
- Laser Alignment Tools: These tools are used for generator and gearbox alignment.
- Crimping Fliers: These tools are specialized pliers for squishing crimp beads.
- Automatic Wire Strippers
- Angle Grinder
- First Aid Kits
- Access Ropes
- Radios
- Toolkit
If you are going to invest in wind turbine installation business, you have to invest on these must have tools, but keep in mind Elbert Hubbart's saying which indicates that "one machine can do the work of fifty ordinary men. No machine can do the work of one extraordinary man" :).
