
The first wind turbine erection project that I participated in, from contractual phase to execution of job, was Sanko Holding’s 60 MW (20 units of Vestas V90) Çatalca
Although our company was the biggest company in Turkey in terms of number of equipments in fleet and quality of service, there were other two companies which could meet the requirements of customer for this project. But what they lack was quality system management and engineering background for realizing execution of job and indicating every needs of this project on paper.
While I was looking documents in the common network, I found a document named “Method of Statement”. This document was including information about dimensions of wind turbine parts and execution steps of job in seven pages. To be able to attract our customer’s attention, I started to expand content of this document.
As result of increasing competitors in the sector, companies have to differentiate by focusing on their competencies to be able to continue their lives. According to Daniel Kahneman’s and Amors Tversky’s study about “Heuristic”, people come to a decision by the help of their peculiar logic which can be named as intiuitive decision. By taking this fact into consideration, organizations have to provide more than the lowest prices. They have to adapt the spontaneously changing rhythm of organization by being flexible enough to apply novelties and become innovative organizations.
To be able to direct this peculiar logic in the favor of our organization, I added information to “Method of Statement” about every steps related to this project which could be stated as equipment check list, tackle check list, turbine details, crane selection, transportation to site, transprtation between turbine pads, assembly pad, layout of turbine parts on pads, erection of tower section, nacelle positioning, rotorblade positioning and lifting studies etc… These documents made our potential customer realize every steps not only about the execution of job, but also about the required excavation jobs to make our cranes perform their jobs safely.
Although there was a slight price different between our competitors and us, we were achieved to be awarded with contract. I am not stating that these documents were the only reason that made them choose us, but I am sure that it played an important role to make us get this job.
As Peter Drucker said “The best way to predict the future, is to create it”. By taking these words into consideration, all members of organization have to know that they have enough power to shape the future of their organization by chasing such incremental or radical innovations.
